A *wonderful* hotel, will definitely stay there again
Hotel Mediterraneo is gorgeous and one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in, and well worth the money. The staff was very corteous and responded very quickly to all our needs. Our "camera matrimoniale" was spacious and clean, as was our bathroom. The windows were double-paned, to keep out the noise from Via Cavour. Our room was right off the elevator lobby, and at first I was worried that we'd be able to hear people coming & going all night--well, that wan't a problem, either. Our room was quiet, comfy and air-conditioned. And there was a safe for our valuables.
THe price includes breakfast, and they had a decemt spread in the breakfast room: eggs (scrambled & hard boiled), cornettas and breads, jams and fruit, cereals and milk. It was nice to be able to eat there before heading out for the day. Also, there's a rooftop terraza with a bar, to enjoy the panoramic skyline (the hotel is on Esquilino, the highest of Rome's hills).
Another plus is that it's two short blocks from Termini train station (quick access to all the buses and both metro lines) and it's *very* easy to walk to all the major sites. 10 minutes down Via Cavour is the Coliseum and Imperial Fora; 15 minutes away is the Piazza Venezia; and about 25 minutes is the Centro Storico. There's good shopping nearby on Via Nazionale.
An example of the helpful staff: One day my husband left a white linen shirt on a hook near his bath towel. We couldn't find it the next day, and figured the maid had accidentally mistaken it with the towel. At the front desk, they told us they'd found it the in laundry, and with profuse apologies, said they'd bring it to our room later that day. Well they sure did, and it was freshly washed & ironed. I teased my husband that he must have planned that all along.
