Nice place to sleep but don't eat there...
This is an old hotel that is kept up fairly well. Staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms are adequate with bathrooms a bit oddly laid out but overall comfortable. The shower has an annoying, wheezing whistle that comes and goes, but mostly goes.
The huge disappointment was the continental breakfast provided to guests. I often stay at Holiday Inn Expresses and they all have the same consistent breakfast nationwide. The food is fresh, hot, and attractive.
Not so at the Chico HI. The food was flat dead, looked like it was sitting there for a couple of days. The eggs had brown burn marks throughout the whole tray. The potatoes were dry and wrinkled as if left out since yesterday. The bacon was Denny's style - hold up to the light and see through it.
I immediately fled the dining room, then Googled restaurants close to the HI. There's a Denny's right next door, but I don't do Denny's. I found a classic diner just 0.7 miles down the street serving a wide range of breakfast choices and all fresh and hot. Cozy Diner is a locals' place, you can tell as soon as you walk in. This is the place to to go.
So the HI is an OK place to stay, but don't get too excited about the free breakfast.
