Reasonably priced for the money
I stay at Century Plaza Hotel and got a special deal on a Deluxe Room. The place is not new and some rooms need to be upgraded. In the Deluxe Room, the bathroom was redesigned recently but some other things in the room were old and needed upgrading. The staff is generally friendly but they do not speak much English. I stayed in a Superior Room one night and it was a little better and had a fantastic city view.
I tried the hotel-sponsered spa service downstairs and they added on extra service fees that were really unncessary. You are better off going to an outside place to negotiate better prices. However, if you are a foriegner, people in China will try to price gouge you-- assuming that you don't know the usual rate of things. It's good to make friends with some of the locals so that they can negotiate on your behalf. A foot massage is usually only 40 RMB to the locals, but they know you are a forienger, they will try to get 100 RMB from you.
You don't need to tip people taxi drivers or restaurant servers. I felt it was customary to tip people in the US but it isn't expected in China. Yes, this part of town has a lot of prostitutes hanging around so I was constantly asked for services. The location is very convenient because of the proximity of the HK border crossing and train station next door. It is very close to the Luo Hu MTR station (3 blocks away).
TIP: Most people in Shenzhen only speak Mandarin. I am Cantonese and very few understood my Chinese dialect so getting around became a bit of a challenge. It's important that you obtain a Shenzhen city map. I got one at the train station for only 6 RMB. The hotel bellhop will charge you 15 RMB (people in China are notorious for creating their own black markets) That way you can just point at the map and show the taxi driver where to go. If you are going anywhere, you should get the hotel staff to write the name and address in Chinese so you can simply show it to the taxi driver because most taxi drivers (and most people in Shenzhen) don't understand anything but Mandarin.
