Not just a hotel
Unlike most people who have posted reviews here, we didn't stay on The Queen Mary but we did spend the day there. We purchased the 1st class passenger museum package.
We got there early so we were able to sit on the shore and watch smaller boats on the ocean.
Then we boarded the ship! Upon boarding they take your picture (which you can purchase in a set for $20 - which is good deal if you want to get it). Then you take a self-guided tour of the ship. They give you enough time to finish that before the first guided tour....which was very interesting.
By that time your hungry and there's a couple of places open for lunch. We ate in the Promenade dining room - the prices were a little high but the food was good. I had a huge chicken taco salad and my husband ate clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. We had milkshakes at the world's greatest milkshake place (I forgot what they called the place, but that's their claim and it's on board the ship). They were DELICIOUS!
The afternoon began with a WWII tour of the ship, like the first tour but while the first one discussed how the ship had been used as a passenger ship, the second tour discussed how they had used it in WWII.
The Scorpion submarine tour (parked along The Queen Mary) is interesting if you are into those things.
Towards the end of the day, we went on the Ghost Tour, which was pretty neat. We got into the inner workings of the ship (the pool and boiler room which are no longer used) and they tried to scare you with ghost stories.
We ended our day with a special event: The Marilyn Monroe exhibit was on board the ship.
For history buffs, and movie buffs as a few movies were filmed on this great location. It's next to the Howard Hughes's airplane hanger (yes they used it in the movie The Aviator (also Pirates of the Caribbean), and two rooms on the ship were used to film other movies. Bob Hope, among others, performed on board during the cruising days.
