Many other choices
We generally seek out smaller boutique hotels because of the level of service and intimacy they usually provide. The reviews on this property seemed to be mixed but the location and types of room offered convinced us to give it a try. What we experienced was unfortunately consistent with the less favorable reviews.
We arrived very late (4:30 a.m.) after several flight cancellations and a last minute decision to make the drive from Philadelphia instead of forfeiting the whole weekend. We contacted the Inn twice to let them know of our late arrival. We booked the two level townhouse room which was an end unit (212). The room smelled very musty and stale. This is an old property so you expect things not to be a certain way but the retrofitted A/C unit was very noisy and the directions provided did not match the model in the room. Being an end unit we also must have been on the opposite wall from some building equipment or machinery because there was a constant hum that from time to time was so loud the bed actually vibrated. It was not the A/C unit because the first night we couldn’t even get that to run but were too tired to mess with it.
The next morning we filled the Jacuzzi tub but after turning the jets on, the water immediately turned a disgusting brown. We did advise the staff and it was cleaned that day but we had no intention of turning it back on. The first day housekeeping did not replenish the coffee supplies in the room and the used coffee pot and mugs were just left without cleaning. The water pressure in the shower was very weak.
All of this being said, the thing that will keep me from recommending this property is that no one we encountered really seemed to care that we were staying there. The hotel knew of our flight cancellations, driving from Philadelphia, lost luggage, etc. yet not once did anyone ask if they could do anything, did we need anything, etc. No one did anything to introduce us to the hotel, advise of services, breakfast, etc. Walking past service personnel or walking into the lobby, no one said a thing, smiled, or greeted us. Basically nothing was said unless a direct question was asked. The deciding moment was when we checked out, I walked to the desk said we were checking out from room 212, and the clerk handed me an envelope and said “Here’s your receipt”. Nothing else. He barely looked up from what he was doing.
