A little Disappointed
We just came back from my 40th birthday celebration and as I am no stranger to Savannah I wanted the group I was traveling with who had never visited this gracious city to experience it in style. We made reservations nearly a year in advance, renting out the entire carriage house and one room in the main house. Upon our arrival we were thrilled with the staff's hospitality and the ambiance of the Inn. However, soon to our dismay we found that the air conditioning was not working in the carriage house. The inn keeper's idea of fixing it was to wrap the condensing lines with duct tape and hope for the best. In spite of our multiple complaints we went two days (out of three) with no air. The more we complained the ruder the inn keepers became. I was nice in my request for them to call a contractor (it was my idea, not theirs) as my friends were uncomfortable and I wanted their first visit to Savannah to be a memorable one (for the good). The inn keeper, Gay Dunlop simply replied "Well, maybe it will be their last (visit to Savannah). I assured her that it would not, but that it probably would be the last at the Hamilton Turner. The air conditioning was finally repaired the afternoon before we left. We received no apology, no discount, no consideration whatsoever. We were made to feel that we had asked too much to have our rooms comfortable. After all--what do you expect for a $2600.00 weekend? We salvaged our trip and made our own good time. Savannah is truly a gem. It is just very disappointing that her most gracious inn failed to meet its reputation. I must say that the staff however, were stupendous. They helped us make the most of it. Their courtesy spoke fathoms. All I can say is get it together inn keepers--or head back north! Hospitality is not optional in your business. Charming ambiance does not make up for poor manners--especially not in Savannah.
