A great place just up the hill from Union Square

My family has been staying at Powell Place for many years. The staff are always friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and elegant (though not super hip, trendy, or ultra-luxurious), the location is great (right up the hill from Union Square... either a quick walk if you're fit, a ride on the cable car, or a very short cab ride). You'll hear the noise of the cable cars from inside the front rooms, but the window glass must be thick because I've never found it too noisy -- it just lends some San Francisco atmosphere. Comfortable beds. I don't have any complaints.
