It's in the Details!
We actually stayed here, many, many years ago. Since that time, as big travelers, we have stayed at all kinds of hotels- from $12/night rooms in Athens, to $400/night rooms in New England (at the "best bed and breakfasts"). And the Hensley House was by far the most memorable- in a great way!
Upon arrival, which was 2 hours after we said we'd be there... the proprietors were most welcoming and accommodating! They spent time visiting, and we got the sense that they were welcoming old friends... who had yet to meet! However, this was also the hick-off to our first anniversary... seeming to sense that, they disappeared quickly, and only surfaced (almost psychically) when we needed something.
Our room was incredible! Fireplace, Jacuzzi tub... everything! But, what set this bed and breakfast apart from any other is the quality of the linens, the softness in the down comforter. The sheets were high count, 100% cotton, the pillows Pacific Down! The details that went into the decor, cleaning, "staging" of this room were impeccable!
The location of the hotel is in Historic Downtown San Jose, near the airport (but not in the flight pattern), close to all major attractions... however, as with any large urban city... it is in a big city... The one down fall of this beautiful oasis is that with big cities come certain problems, such as transients, odd neighbors, and the like. As experienced travelers, we had no qualms about walking about... however, I'd advise my mom to take taxis, or a car if she were to stay there (both of which are easy alternatives).
In the years since then, I have thought about writing the Hensley House a thank you note, for going so far and above what is expected, and never have... so, to them, I thank you!
