Great for Families

This place has changed hands and when we went last month it was the Hilton. We stayed 6 nights here and 6 at Kuhio Shores condo in south shore. The Hilton is in lush Lihue, convenient to the airport, but off the beaten path so the hotel feels nicely private and secluded. A $10 fee per day covers beach towels, pool towels and valet parking which was wonderful for our family, just get your stuff together, get out of the car and walk into the lobby, an attendant takes away your car to park it. You may also park yourself if you like. The room was on the smaller side but still spacious enough for 2 adults and 3 kids, especially if you don't plan to spend a lot of time in the room like us. Free newspaper every morning, good room service, a little store with food, toiletries and trinkets off the lobby. Lobby was simply beautiful, grounds were very clean. Concierge in lobby can plan any and all activities you'd like to do during your stay. Service was always polite, the 2 restaurants had good food. One dinner we had was simply awesome. The kids loved all the tropical birds and koi ponds on the hotel grounds, including mynah birds, cardinals, goldfinches, doves, black swans and of course wild chickens. We loved the many pools and 2 hot tubs, lava waterfalls and the waterslide. The sand pool was perfect for our toddler. Also the free drinks at the pool bar is great but the mai tais were weak. Can get beer or wine too though, and sodas or juice for the kids. They have free poolside entertainment nightly which you can watch from your room lanai if it faces the pool area. We had a 3rd floor oceanview which also faced the pool- perfect! The area of Lihue is on the east side of the island, which is nice in that you can visit east, north and south sights (and there are tons of things to do) conveniently. Kapa'a is only minutes away with shopping and restaurants. The beach in front of the hotel is strolling distance but it is not a prime beach for swimming due to surf, good for walking and combing however. The Lydgate Beach Park is a 3 minute drive from the hotel with a WONDERFUL, protected beach area, great for the kids with easy snorkeling (my 3 year old even did it) and playgrounds. The only bad things about this hotel were that the vending machine on our floor was out of order, had to go to a different floor for a soda, our mini fridge leaked water, and the bathroom was not cleaned as thorouoghly as I would have liked, with a little chipped plaster on the tub etc. It is not a perfect hotel, especially if you are super picky about little things, but it is a very good bargain for a lovely place.
