Beautiful, interesting and very haunted.
My boyfriend and I live 10 minutes from the Biltmore and have spent much time there enjoying holidays, brunches, parties, events or just cocktails poolside or on one of the many lovely, old, victorian porches. Last weekend we decided to stay a night in one of the queen mini suites, the last suite available. We checked in at the lobby, which was added rather recently and does not match the hotel at all. I love the oldness of the hotel, it really is like stepping back in time. Yes, it is still in need of some repair but I have seen much progress being made over the years, and the atmosphere has always been a joy to me. Im in my 30s but I feel like a 1920s movie star there. I love the long hallways and the decorative lighting, the stained glass, the historic photos and the gorgeous banisters. Its a very nice place for a wedding. Many parts of the hotel are simply grand! It will take time to have it looking shiny and new again, the place is huge!
So we take the elevator to the second floor, its creaky and old too, and arrive at our suite. The suite itself has a certain charm, is clean and spacious but is lacking in dcor. I half expected a musty smell but everything was fresh. There were no wires hanging, no torn wallpaper, sparse but not unpleasant. The shower, however, was awful, there was no pressure, just a dribble. We left our things and went down to the pool for drinks. The pool is great, super clean and sparkly, very welcoming. Lunch, poolside, was also good, above average, fresh and tasty.
After a bit we head back to the room to relax. Well, relax we didnt. Something was harassing my boyfriend. I kid you not, the place really is haunted. He experienced several very cold spells that passed through him, sort of leapt in and then back out, over and over. It really started to freak him out so we left to a friends house for a few hours.
Upon returning around 1am we got into bed, he fell asleep and I stayed awake to just check out the room and redecorate it in my mind. The very moment that I closed my eyes and began to sleep I was met with a very loud, whispered yell in my left ear. I couldnt tell you what was said but it was two syllables spoken with great intent. Not friendly. I woke my boyfriend and we just sat there for a bit. There was no doubt in my mind what had happened. No, were not crazy. No were not on drugs. We didnt run screaming as neither of us are easily frightened but the thing continued to linger in the corner of the room near the bed. There was no way I could fall back to sleep in that room. Around 3am we packed up and went home.
The Belleview Biltmore is like no other place Ive ever seen. Its amazing, historic, elegant and the staff is friendly. I highly recommend it for events and we had the best Thanksgiving Day dinner there. I will certainly continue to go there often but will never, ever attempt to spend the night.
