I travel to Santa Barbara regularly for business and pleasure and always try to stay at the Eagle Inn.
Outstanding value and location, it's near all SB amenities (main shopping/restaurant district of State St, beach, marina, pier, train station) in a quiet neighborhood setting. Each room is refreshingly unique with no corporate chain feel. Staff is professional, helpful and maintain privacy for guests.
Avoid the two (?) rooms that have only double beds unless you are traveling w/family and need a 2nd room/extra sleeping area for children. The double rooms are small and feel as though they were crammed in as an afterthought. For longer/vacation stays, get the studios, they feel like a home away from home (small kitchen, walk in closets, hard wood floors, high ceilings with tons of light)!
