We want to be locked up at the Jailhouse Inn!
Jailhouse Inn is exactly what we were looking for. During previous trips we found trying to find parking anywhere in town extremely aggravating. If you do find a spot you need to keep going back to feed the meter or pay a lot fee each day. If you want to leave for a while and come back later in the day you will find yourself riding around and around looking for an empty spot and the lots fill up early. Located right downtown the Inn provided plenty of parking and allowed us to walk everywhere even to the Mansions, yet still have a place to retreat to when we needed a rest. We could take a drive and always have a parking space ready and waiting for us when we returned. There are many great restaurants and bars only steps away from the Inn.
Our room on the 3rd floor was large, and equipped with a small refrigerator, overstuffed chairs, sofa, and desk. The bed was firm and very comfortable with cozy bed coverings. Everything is painted bright white lending to a clean crisp feeling. (the outside could use a new coat of paint) The jail house theme is moderately done. I thought it was quite clever that the bathroom shower curtain was black and white stripes! Bath towels were thick and soft. The continental breakfast was sufficient and available until 11:00am. Each afternoon we came to enjoy the inviting aroma of Darryl's (the manager) fresh baked cookies wafting up the stairs to our room.
Just remember, the Inn is right downtown and you are in a busy place. Delivery trucks arrive early, and restaurant dumpsters are being emptied to make room for a new day. The day is coming to life by 8:00am. Buses pass by all day. Night life is prominent every day of the week and people are walking the streets at all hours. All that said the noise never bothered us at all.
We have stayed at several of the Inns in Newport, without any major complaints. But after each stay we continued to search for a new place to stay, one that would be just right for our needs. Our searching has now stopped, the Jailhouse Inn is where we will return to each time we visit this historical town.
