Review title
Inexpensive for Key West but NOT Worth It
Review excerpt
As others have noted, the rooms are tiny and the amenities negligible, which I can accept for the $105/night, which is good for Key West. It is the service that was so lacking. It began badly and only got worse. Right outside our room two guys were building a deck so all we heard the whole time was sawing and hammering. We couldn't sleep or open the windows. Roosters crow as early as 4 am right outside the door, and others complained of this too. The tiny TV was broken and the replacement was too. The owners (a couple) promised to fix it the next day and did nothing. The cleaning was terrible. There was mold in the shower, and the maid service was sporadic at best. We had to pick towels off the floor and reuse them after three days because by early evening the room had still not be made up. The owners were nowhere to be found. We used reused plastic cups for three days and finally threw them away, but because the owner did not replace them (or the kleenex) we had to cut water bottles in half for drinking glasses.
They post a sign telling you not to bother them after 5 pm because the Caribbean House was not a hotel but a guesthouse. I guess that means they don't have to provide customer service like a hotel even though we were still paying them for the accommodation. In any event, they were not available before 5 pm either.
Worst of all, you are charged the whole stay up front and no matter what, you will not be given a refund of any kind. We had an emergency and needed to leave a day early. We gave the owners 2 days notice and the husband said it would be no problem to refund the last day. When we loaded the car, however, and checked out, the wife said we would not be given the refund unless they could find someone else to take the room. This would have been a Saturday night, in season, and would have been no problem. The inn had a big No Vacancy sign up all week and on Saturday, and yet we were charged the extra night we weren't there, even though the husband said the refund would be no problem.
With the combination of noise (including a very loud next door a/c that continually runs), poor service, and credibility problems, I would stay clear of the Caribbean House. We're usually laid back and roll with small inconveniences. It was major stuff here. There are far better places in Key West for not that much more money.
