I visted the Mandarin Oriental in August, 2007. The hotel is nice, and not like the smokey, tacky casino hotels located on Macau Peninsula. The casino is discreet; I almost didn't notice it.
The service was great. Staff was efficient, helpful.
Room was spacious. Bathroom a bit old feeling.
Great pool - but too many kiddies in it. Jacuzzi was nice. Pool clears out in the evening.
There's a day spa which I didn't use. Gym facilities were really nice, new, modern and great cardio machines.
Location was OK - close to ferry station, and close all sites (Macau is small). Difficult to get a taxi from the hotel though since it's so close to the ferry station.
I felt that the clean, relaxing environment was worth the extra money. The casino atmosphere was not appealing to me.
